Back on topic. Ted Uzzle has a couple of words on EQ and hearing deficienciesin TL 232A.

Thanks for referencing TL 232. That's a real good one. To paraphrase;

"Don't try to equalize for hearing losses...those with imperfect hearing use the same ears to listen to real speech and music, as they do reproduced sounds."

Of particular interest are the venue-specific, typical response curves for SR, theater, monitoring, and hi-level live rock. All have in common varying degrees of LF and HF rolloff. If you consider the monitoring plot the nearest comparable app to your home setup, you'll see that the critical 100-5,000Hz band is EQ'd as flat as possible, with -3dB/octave rolloff both above and below. I believe that 100-5k range is what GM refers to as our "acute hearing BW". It's not likely a coindidence that typical Altec 2-way response is pretty close to those specs right out of the box. The concept also closely follows Hilliard's "balanced BW" philosophy, only in the studio case, it's ~ 2 octaves on each end at a fairly benign -3dB/oct slope.

There's some real good tips for measurement mics in there too.

My bad. I should've used a more universal quantifier than "pretty close", which around here is defined by whether or not your nearest neighbor can see you peeing off your deck.

Perhaps it's not so obvious, but it's worthy of note Uzzle's TL follows Altecs' RTA/EQ method of seeking naturalness in various venues. Forget impulse response for a moment and think steady-state, with all the reflected energy the room has to offer. Seems we have this nasty habit of not listening in anechoic boxes.

"Naturalness of sound reproduction is a complex combination of accuracy, familiarity, comfort, illusion, and other factors. There is no cookbook for acheiving it, and may never be."

"Do not make one criterion paramount and satisfy it at the expense of all others. Attempting a frequency response ruler-flat from barometric pressure to gamma rays may seem intellectually satisfying, but it sounds awful."
